2019
December 4 – Our annual Christmas dinner took place on Wednesday, December 4th at 6:00 p.m. The dinner was at Logan’s Roadhouse, 1000 Timber Drive East, Garner, NC 27529 located in White Oak Crossing.
We had a great turnout. We had a fun evening of socializing. And once again we played the Dirty Santa gift game. (participants brought a wrapped gift valued at approximately $10.)
In addition, club dues are due…they are still $20. for individual and $25 for family. If you plan to pay them that evening, please put them in an envelope labeled with your name and the amount. That way Marty will know who paid her.
Thanks so much for being a part of the GSD Club of Greater Raleigh and we look forward to 2020.
October 2 – Our speaker was Diana Hauser with OffLeash K9 Training. Diana was formerly with Southeast German Shepherd Rescue. She attended meetings in the past as a member and has been back as a speaker to tell us about OffLeash. She suggested a focus on puppy socializing and training. So let’s bring our pups….young and old out to hear what Diana has to say.
September – no meeting due to weather.
August 7 – Our monthly club meeting was Wednesday, August 7. Our speakers were Dr. Lauren Shelby and Ashleigh Caplin with VCA veterinary clinic. They talked about VCA and senior dog care. We had include a Q&A for other subjects.
June – Our speaker was Jason with Just Dog People. Just Dog People is a pet supply store located at 91 Glen Rd, Garner, NC 27529 – https://justdogpeople.com/. Jason talked about the philosophy behind and services offered at Just Dog People and presented dog food 101. Thank you to club member Deeda Duncan for suggesting Just Dog People as a club program.
March 6 – This months speaker was Travis with Pupsi. Pupsi is located in Cary, NC and provides daycare, grooming, training and boarding at their facility. If you’d like additional information, visit their website at https://pupsiinc.com/
January 2 – We did not have a speaker for our January program. There are several good ones lined up but no one was available for January….too close to New Years Day. However, we got together and visited. We made plans for 2019. Suggestions prior to the meeting: 1. Perhaps discuss ‘new members’ packet – which we tossed around in the past but I think it’s a good idea to formalize the packet and get it to members. Everyone’s input on what the packet should contain is valued. 2. We also have a big event coming up in conjunction with our club specialty show in the spring, We are hosting the SE area Futurity/Maturity specialty show….this is a big deal for our club. Not only does it provide additional monies but brings in a lot of people. We are also planning a ‘fun match’ for puppies which I will explain more about at the meeting.
ALSO, 2019 club dues are due as I have to submit membership list and fee to our parent club and AKC. Individual members dues are $20. and family is $25. Please bring a check or cash and submit to Marty Stuhmer.

2018
November 8 – Our speaker was Petra Bizikova and Dr. Herrmann from the NC Vet School and the topic was allergies versus autoimmune skin diseases of GSD. Several members have recently experienced skin issuers with their GSDs as well as flea reactions.
October 2 – Our meeting this month was on the first Tuesday of the month, October 2. We met as a club and participated in a swap. Suggested items to swap were dog related items, i.e. books, toys, collars, leashes, perhaps doggie diapers, or any other dog related items you have around the house and are no longer using. We can donate any items not claimed to local animal shelter but it’s not required…you can simply take items home if you wish. We’d also like to start with meeting participants introducing themselves and sharing the following: 1. Where you got your GSD. 2. What training have you achieved with you GSD…be it professional training or something you’ve done on your own. 3. Your favorite trick you’ve accomplished with your GSD. It is not absolutely necessary you introduce yourselves as some of us are shy. However, this gives us a chance to get to know more about each other. If we have extra time, we can open the meeting to questions regarding GSD care, training and health. We also need to discuss upcoming officer elections.
August 1 – Our speaker was Vanessa Davis with Dirty Dogs Spa (Wake Forest) www.dirtydogslllc.com and Zoomy Dogs (Durham) http://www.zoomydogs.com/. Vanessa will tell us about her background and services available through her two dog related businesses. ZoomyDogs is a holistic health and wellness community center for dogs and their people. “We provide an inviting, welcoming, comfortable, supportive environment for people and dogs to have fun together, learn new things, stay active and enjoy the company of others.” In addition,Karen Damari will finalize RDO needs and who she has heard from thus far by way of volunteers.
June 6 – Our speaker was JP Phinney (John Paul) owner of Unleashed dog and cat food stores. JP is one of our favorite speakers and discussed pet nutrition and what his stores have to offer. JP spoke last year and we’ve run into him at pet events including AKC RDO days. In addition, Adele Todd (club member) has devised a bit of a game. She would like attendees to bring their dogs favorite toy and tell a brief description of how you choose it and how you dog responds. I believe she told me there is a prize for best toy and story.
May 2 – Our speaker was Jan Santel. Jan has over 25 years experience training all breeds of dogs and has proven success with 140 AKC and UKC agility and obedience titles with her own dogs. Over the years, she has been instrumental in helping students achieve more than 5,000 titles in agility and obedience in both AKC and UKC. Jan is an AKC and UKC Agility Judge, Tester/Observer of Allicance of Therapy Dogs, trainer of dogs for the handicapped and CGC plus S.T.A.R. Puppy Program trainer and evaluator.
February 7 – Julio Hernandez with Sandhill working dog club will be joining us and going over training and breeding. If you would like to read up on Julio this is the link to his page….. www.JulioHernandezK9.com
2017
November – Our speaker was Renee Westich with North Carolina Canin Collaoration. She gave an engaging talk about the sport of Barn Hunting.
October – Andres from Camp K9 Training came back. Andres caught us up on what he’s been doing this summer by way of dog training, demo’d one of his dogs and then we had Q&A.
September – Our speaker was a deputy from the Wake County Sheriff’s K-9 unit. He brought one of the unit dogs and told us about how the dogs are trained and cared for. In addition, he shared stories of dogs active in the K-9 unit. A big thank you to Sarah Bridges for arranging this meeting.
August – Our speaker was Mandy from Teamworks, Teamworks is located in North Raleigh just outside Wake Forest. They have a large facility for training which includes agility and all levels of obedience; as well as a swimming pond for canines. Mandy talked about the Teamwork philosophy and what all they offer as a canine training facility.
June – Our speaker was Andres from Camp k9 Training. Andres talked about his philosophy as a dog trainer and what Camp K9 training has to offer. He brought his 5 month old Belgian Malinois to demostrate protection training.
April – Our speaker was JP from Unleashed. Unleashed is a dog food and supply business with several locations in the Raleigh are. JP discussed dog nutrition and what Unleashed has to offer. He is extremely knowledgeable about nutrition and how the food was produced at the manufacturers. He said that at every store there is someone as knowledgeable.
March – We are going to discuss and plan for our upcoming show.
February – From Mary, our club President: The subject for the February meeting is to discuss what it takes to host a dog show. We’ll review the selection of judges, registration with the AKC, permission from clubs we are hosting our specialty show along with, as well as set-up, volunteer needs and a whole lot more. It’s important that the members know what all it takes to put on our yearly GSD specialty show as it is how we raise money to support the club expenses.
January – From Mary, our club president: “Our speakers for January are from Quail Corners Veterinary Hospital. The two doctors – Dr. Shannon Raboin and Dr. Kristin Raboin – will tag team and present together. They are married and both work full-time at Quail Corners. Dr./Mr. Shannon Raboin works exclusively on the emergency service and can speak to common emergencies of GSDs. Dr./Mrs. Kristin Raboin splits her time between our primary and weekend emergency service – so she can speak to healthy aging of GSDs.” Don’t forget club dues are also due.
2016
November 2 – Our speaker was Diana from Lap It Up which is an indoor dog activity, swimming, and training center located in Durham, North Carolina. Yes, they have an indoor pool for dogs only – and much more!. Check out their website at www.lapitup.biz for more details on what Lap It Up has to offer.
October 5 – For the October meeting we will have a special guest – Sheriff Donny Harrison and his k-9’s! Thanks to Sarah Bridges for once again arranging to have Donnie Harrison, Wake Count Sheriff, as our guest speaker to demo the Wake County K9 police. In addition to a demo he will discuss selection and training for the K9 police. Thhis is one of our most popular meetings…Please pass this on th anyone that you think would be interested.
Wednesday, September 7, 2016 – The September meeting was our annual indoor picnic. The club will provide chicken and we ask that those attending bring a side dish to add to the buffet. Please let us know by September 1 if you will be attending and what you plan to bring so we are sure to get enough chicken and have the right amoun of plates, cups and utensils. We are three months overdue on having a short business meeting prior to eating. We have membership applications to read and vote on as well as other club decisions and an update on our spring specialty show.
August 3, 2016 – From Mary, our club president: Our scheduled speaker is Julianne Davis, MS, DVM and the topic is OFA certification. Although I’m sure the subject of hip dysplasia will be discussed as it’s difficult to talk about one without the other. Julianne is A North Carolina native from Morehead City, Dr. Julianne Davis graduated from NC State Veterinary School in 2008 then completed a small animal internship before joining Quail Corners in 2010. Though she is very proud of her veterinary degree, her undergraduate degree came from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and she is a Tarheel at heart. Dr. Davis lives in Raleigh and has a son named Luke. Her four-legged children include Chief, a German Shepherd, and Zoe, a shepherd mix. Dr. Davis loves what she does and understands that being a veterinarian is about more than “liking animals.” Her professional interests include soft tissue surgery, endocrinology, and nutrition. In her spare time she enjoys spending time with her family at the beach, live music shows, and snowboarding.

May 4, 2016 – From Mary, our Club President: Our scheduled speaker is Suzanne Kalafian owner of Superior Dog Training located in Cary, NC. Superior Dog Training also sponsors community events and participates in dog related events. Janine has worked with Suzanne with all of her dogs at one point or another. And I like the fact they offer a Saturday ‘Hounds on the Town’ training where they meet at a park and walk working on training needs; or just enjoying an outing with your furry friends and people who feel the same as you do about them.
April 6, 2016 – Our scheduled speaker is Emily Hunt DVM, CVA. Dr. Hunt joined Bowman Animal Hospital & Cat Clinic in 2006. Among her specialties are acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine.
March 2, 2016 – From Mary, our President – “Our scheduled speaker for the March club meeting, on Wednesday, March 2, 2016, is Brian C. Gilger, DVM, MS, Dipl. ACVO, Dipl. ABT, Professor of Ophthalmology – North Carolina State University. The Ophthalmology service at the NC State Veterinary Hospital provides specialty ophthalmic services for large and small animals referred by general veterinary practitioners. The entire staff helps provide a full range of diagnostic, therapeutic and surgical services. The Ophthalmology service treats eye disorders, such as: dry eye, cataracts, corneal ulcers, distichia, entropion to name a few. The service also performs breed certification eye examinations of purebred dogs. This annual diagnostic examination screens for inherited or congenital eye disorders so that breeding recommendations can be made. Dr. Gilger will talk about eye conditions common to German Shepherd Dogs.”
February 3, 2016 – From Mary, our newly elected President – “Our scheduled speaker is Dr. David Huff, DVM with Plantation Animal Hospital in Clayton, N.C. I’ve asked Dr. Huff to talk to us about canine healthcare from birth through senior, i.e. vaccines, flea/tick and heartworm preventative, recommended diet; as well as supplement and vitamin recommendations. Dr. Dave Huff graduated from the NC State CVM in May of 1989. He practiced at a small animal facility for 2 years in Pennsylvania and then returned to North Carolina to practice small animal and large animal at Neuse River Veterinary Hospital in Wendell. He also practiced for 4 years at a small animal practice in Beaufort, South Carolina, and then returned to Neuse River Veterinary Hospital in 1999. He has developed several interests and specialties over the years including a strong interest in small animal surgery. He has been affiliated with ICG/Synbiotics/Zoetis since 1991 as a canine semen freezing center. He was the first such center in North Carolina, and at the time only the 3rd such center on the east coast. He added PennHip radiograph training and certification in 1996, and has been doing chiropractic care in animals since 1999. He started using the Erchonia 3 LT in July 2009 for his patients.”
January 6, 2016 – From Mary, our newly elected President – “Our scheduled speaker is Shane Gentry with Sally Said So Professional Dog Training. For more information visit his website at http://www.sallysaidso.com/. I actually met Shane and had him evaluate my boy Rocco about two years ago. I was impressed with his ability to read a dog fairly quickly by asking questions of the owner and then meeting the dog. A lot of what he prescribes is behavior modification and he puts the ownership on the dog’s owner to do as Shane recommends. Of course Shane will be there to assist owners implementing his suggestions. But I’ll let him tell you the rest of the story…..” And it was a very lively and engaging presentation!

November 4, 2015 – Our scheduled speaker is C. Scott Bailey, DVM, MS, Dip. ACT, Assistant Professor, Theriogenology, North Carolina State University, College of Veterinary Medicine, for a presentation on theriogenology in canines.Theriogenology is the branch of veterinary medicine concerned with reproduction, including the physiology and pathology of male and female reproductive systems of animals and the clinical practice of veterinary obstetrics, gynecology, and andrology. Theriogenologists are veterinarians with advanced training in animal reproductionand obstetrics. I think this will be an interesting program not only for the breeders in our club but members will learn what goes into selection for a ‘good’ breeding.
October 17 2015 – Our Club Picnic! UPDATE – Now on Saturday Our fall club picnic was on Saturday October 17 at 3:00 in the afternoon.There’s a playground for children and farm animals to visit. Dogs must be on leash during the first part of our picnic, and under close supervision when we take our walk and hayride.There are 60 acres fenced and we will take a walk in the woods and let the dogs play in the creek after our meal. A hayride and a bonfire are on the schedule.The club will provide fried chicken and sweet tea for the picnic. We ask everyone to bring a veggie, salad, or dessert and we will provide lemonade.
October 7, 2015 – Our speaker was Dr. Barbara Sherman. Dr. Barbara Sherman is a board-certified veterinary behavior specialist and the Director of the Behavioral Medicine Service at the NC Vet School. The Behavioral Medicine department specializes in the treatment of behavior disorders in companion animals; these include anxiety disorders, elimination problems, compulsive behaviors and many other behavioral issues in dogs and cats. When seen at the Behavioral Medicine Service, patients are evaluated with their owners and a management program is developed. This generally consists of specific instructions regarding environmental management and behavior modification techniques. After a medical evaluation, behavioral medication may also be recommended.
September 2 – Our past president Bill Pfeiffer spoke…He has long time history with GSD’s. He has been an active, participating member in several dog clubs including the GSD parent club. In addition, while in the military he worked with the group that trained military dogs as well as initiating the puppy stimulation program. Bill is a wealth of knowledge on the GSD breed and we look forward to learning about that history. You do not need to be a member to attend.
August 5 – At our meeting on Wednesday August 5, we had a special guest, Donnie Harrison, Wake County Sheriff. He and his K-9 Sargent discussed selection and training for the K-9 police. Always a popular and engaging presentation, each of the stories that they shared clearly demonstrated their love for their jobs and the genuine concern and commitment that they have for their community. Thank you Sheriff Harrison!
July 1 – We watched an excellent training video and had an informative discussion of training techniques. We also started planning for our show next year.
June 3, 2015 – MOVIE NIGHT continues…we will watch the last half of the DVD on herding that we started last month. Who wins the competition? We find out on Wednesday!
May 6 – MOVIE NIGHT!!!! We watched the first half of the herding DVD. Yes there was popcorn!
April 1, 2015 – Our program speaker is club member Janine Hamlin. She will relay how she has obtained certificates for both of her current dogs for dog tricks. It’s fun to do and all you need have is someone to witness your dog performing the tricks. Janine will go over the different levels and type of tricks. Our plan is to give you a couple of months to work teaching your dog’s tricks and then we’ll have another program to focus on witnessing your dog’s tricks so you can submit for a certificate….it will be fun!
February, 2015 – At our February meeting, Lynn Rasmussen spoke on therapy dogs, accompanied by her certified therapy dog, Rin. If you want to see more, they will be featured on the local CW22 network (WLFL) Sunday morning show, 11:30 on 2/22 and 3/1; the topic is rescue and therapy dogs. They have also been filmed for a Nat Geo Wild show with a working title of “Dognition” about the intelligence of dogs and the bond we have with them. The air date has not been set yet – stay tuned for updates!
January 7, 2015 – Dr. Ben Tham from the NCSU Veterinary School will be speaking on autoimmune diseases in dogs, specifically in the German Shepherd Dog. Your dogs are welcome to come for socialization.
December 3, 2014 – Ho Ho Ho!!…..It’s time for our club Christmas dinner. We have a reservation at Ragazzi’s for Wednesday, December 3, 2014 beginning at 6:30 and planning to eat around 7:00. The address is 1514 US 70 Hwy W., Garner and the number is 919-772-9772. If possible let us know if you plan to attend so we can make sure we have enough space set aside for the group. We plan to play ‘Dirty Santa’ so if you want to participate please bring a gift in the $10 range…gift does not have to be dog related.

September, 2014 – Because the Millbrook facility is undergoing renovations, in lieu of the regular September meeting (which would have taken place Wednesday, September 3rd), our club is taking part in the AKC Responsible Dog Owner Day (https://www.apps.akc.org/classic/clubs/rdod/index.cfm) on Saturday, September 20th. AKC RDO days is taking place at the NC fair grounds and the time is 10-3.
July 2 -Ben Tham – Veterinarian at the NCSU Vet School will speak on autoimmune skin diseases. Allergies are, by far, the most acute and most prevalent problem seen in dogs and definitely in GSDs. Ben will speak on allergies (food and environment and flea), their recognition, diagnostic work up involved in their management, treatment options and secondary complications seen in dogs with allergies
June 4, 2014 – Andrea and Colby Self with Sit Means Sit Dog Training will speak about the services they offer at Sit Means Sit and answer any training questions club members may have. May 7, 2014 – Former club member Janine Hamlin will explain ‘lure course’ work. She is active in the event with her GSD – Jake. She is familiar with the various organizations through which lure coursing is available and will explain the difference between those organization, i.e. rules, certifications, locations, etc. She has video of Jake running a lure course. April 2, 2014 – Our meeting features Mary Foster and her son Trace who own Pupsi Inc. in Cary. They are a boarding and training facility. Trace will talk about dog training in general and answer questions about training concerns. Bring your dogs and your questions/problems you might have for some helpful ideas.
March 5, 2014 – Our program for March 5th is going to focus on temperament testing. With a video of what is involved in taking a temperament test. Temperament testing is also a title that can be added to your dog’s name, once they pass. If time allows, we would then like to discuss what it is members are seeking when they join the GSDCGR and what type of programs they would be interested in.Thank you and we look forward to seeing you.
February 5, 2014 – Our program for February 5th is going to focus on what is involved in showing a dog in conformation. Some of our members enter their GSDs in conformation dog shows, while many have not ever considered it. In preparation for our club’s own GSDCGR dog show this spring, we’d like to unpack the mystery of dog shows, explain how to do it, and why it is a fun thing to do. Our dog show is our club’s main fund-raising event, a very important part of who we are.
Our guest speaker will be Jeremy Hohman. Jeremy has 20 plus years of experience as a handler. His primary focus is All Bred Shows and he shows German Shepard Dogs, Shiba Inus, Rottweilers and Akitas. He has also shown dogs in Specialty dog shows and has participated at the GSD and Shiba Inu national shows. Jeremy was the handler for club members Deeda Duncan & Sarah Bridges GSDs and finished three of Deeda’s dogs and one or two of Sarah’s in their championships. In addition to his professional handling experience, he has taught conformation classes for multiple breeds at Carolina Ranch dog kennel and veterinarian office.
January, 2014 – The Community Center building is closed Wednesday, January 1, so we will not be having an official meeting. However, Ellen is hosting a planning meeting at her home Wednesday, January 8 for board members and other interested members. Please contact her if you are planning to attend so she will know how many to expect.
November , 2013 – Our next meeting speaker is Cat Warren, Prof of literature at NC State U.She loves working with her German Shepherd Dogs in the demanding challenge of search and rescue. She has focused and applied her self to the challenge of cadaver recovery, including under water recovery.Cat works closely with many of the local police units in the Raleigh/Durham and especially with the Durham officers.Her book is wonderfully written to be both enjoyed and to teach.
September 4, 2013 – Linda Kerr returned to do Canine Good Citizen testing and training.

June 5, 2013 – Linda Kerr will assist us in preparing our German Shepherd Dogs to take the AKC’s Canine Good Citizens (CGC)award. Her experience as a dog trainer is outstanding. Linda is an AKC certified CGC evaluator.It is just basic manners that we want our dogs to learn: To sit quietly and let someone go over them, not to jump up on people, not to react negatively around other dogs, learning the sit, down and stay commands and also coming when called. There are 10 steps to CGC and she will explain them all to you. Many of these things will help you in the breed ring too.
Background:
Linda is a former member of the Ft. Worth, TX German Shepherd Club; German Shepherd Club of Greater Raleigh; APDT – Association of Pet Dog Trainers, taught competition obedience and CGC classes at Durham Kennel Club and privately, she also served on the Board of Directors and Obedience Committee for DKC.
Summary of accomplishments:
Put Breed Champion on male Corgi by myself (including a 5 pt. major from the classes the day after a Corgi Specialty) Linda’s first and ONLY breed ring career!! He also earned a CD (Novice – Companion Dog AKC title)
Performance: 2 Herding titles; HT and PT on a Corgi
7 AKC Companion Dog titles (4 GSDs & 3 Corgis)
Abbey (Corgi) age 13 earned many AKC obedience titles: CD, CDX, UD, UDX and UKC titles: UCD and UCDX; She earned her Utility Dog title in three straight shows which is unheard of. The Utility class is the most difficult and had a pass rate of 17%. The year she earned her UDX she was one of only 6 Corgis in the country to earn it that year. She has earned High in Trial and High Combined Scores prior to her retirement in 2006.
Agility: Roxie, Linda’s youngest Corgi isn’t 3 yet and has already earned all her AKC agility titles through Novice, Open and Excellent in both Jumpers and Standard agility most with placements of 1st or 2nd. We are working on obedience now.
Also, Linda would like to assist members to prepare for the testing meeting to work on any issues they might be having in training for the CGC.
Dr Mathews will discuss his planned research project for this summer. He is looking at the joint (The attachment between the spine and the pelvis). He indicates that it is unknown how this angle affects other joint angles and the development of the skeletal system in the hind limbs. He will study both German Shepherd Dogs and Labrador Retrievers.
May 1 – Dr Kyle Mathews, DVM, MS, DACVS – Professor – Small Animal Surgery, Terry Companion Vet Med Center North Carolina State University, School of Veterinary Medicine.
Study will begin May 15, 2013.
March 6 – Linda Kerr, a certified Canine Good Citizen (CGC) evaluator, will be speaking on the CGC title. There will be handouts to use during the program. She will come back in a few months, when it is warmer, to test anyone who would like to test for the CGC. We will also be making final plans for the Futurity/Maturity that will be March 20th through Sunday March 24th and our Specialty shows on March 22 and 23, 2013
February 6 – Sarah Bridges will bring her Sophie and will be speaking on Therapy dogs. Sarah has been extremely successful with Sophie and is helping to improve other’s lives.
January 2 – Ellen Marshburn, the Obedience and Training Chair for the Raleigh Kennel Club, will be demonstrating training techniques and will be answering questions. She teaches the 10 week Obedience Training Program for the city of Raleigh at the Millbrook Center in both the Spring and Fall. Ellen has many years experience and has a strong following of obedience fans
December 5 – Our Annual Christmas gathering. We will be meeting at Ragazzi’s in Raleigh on Highway 70. We will begin to gather around 6:30 and will order around 7:00. Please bring a small gift (around $10.00) if you wish to participate in the Santa game and there will be door prizes! November 7- The North Carolina Canine Emergency Response Team (NCCERT) will discuss their activities in the SE. They cover VA, NC, and SC as active areas of involvement. They will also discuss how any of you can participate in and achieve National Certified “CERT” recantation.
October 3 – Always a favorite! Wake County Sheriff Donnie Harrison and one of his K-9 handlers will present a demonstration and discuss their acivities using K-9’s.
September 5 – Our guest speaker will be Dr. Scott Bailey DVM. Joining him will be Dr. James Floyd who recently joined the faculty. Dr. Bailey is a professor of Theriogenology at the NCSU School of Veterinay Medicine and will be discussing recent and current research in the Therio department. Afterwards there will be a Q&A session, so come prepared with items of interest.
August 1 – The Annual Club picnic at Millbrook Exchange Park. The club will provide chicken and paper goods, members are asked to bring side dishes. Come join us for camaraderie and good food! Your dogs are wecome to attend too!
July 2012 – Happy 4th of July! No meeting. Millbrook Exchange Park is closed on July 4.
Wednesday, June 6 – “SO, you have a German Shepherd… What next? This will be a fun meeting where several members will each give a brief discussion on Herding, Obedience, Tracking, Conformation, and more. Most members are very experienced and their dogs have earned many titles. Others (ahem) are new to the breed and want to learn more about certain sports. Each will give a ten minute presentation and will provide handouts. It will be a lot of fun to learn about all the exciting events you and your dog can share!
Wednesday May 2, 2012 – Bill has obtained a copy of the PBS “Dogs Decoded” Understanding the Human-Dog Relationship.Dogs have been domesticated for longer than any other animal on the planet, and humans have developed a unique relationship with these furry friends.We treat our pets like a part of the family, and feel they can understand us in way other animals can’t.Now, new research is revealing what dog lovers have suspected all along; dogs have an uncanny ability to read and respond to human emotion.Humans, in turn, respond to dogs with the same hormone responsible for bonding mothers to their babies. How did this incredible relationship between humans and dogs come to be? And why do dogs, so closely related to wolves, behave so differently? Dogs decoded investigates new discoveries in genetics that are illuminating the origin of dogs — with big implications for the evolution of human culture as well.We watched the first half at our April meeting and had a discussion afterward. We will watch the second half at our May meeting.It is fascinating informations and well worth the time.

April 4 – We watched the first half of PBS’s “Dogs Decoded” and had a discussion afterward.
March 7, 2012. – Discussion about holding a dog show. This seems appropriate as a lead-up to our two specialty shows scheduled for the Friday March 23, daytime, outdoor event and Saturday, March 24, 2012, also an outdoor event.
February 1, 2012 – Diana Hauser spoke about German Shepherd rescue. SGSR rescued an awesome 245 dogs last year!
January 4, 2012 – Peter Lunding Esq brought us up to date on possible, pending NC dog legislation and also we discussed the NC Federation of Dog Clubs up-coming year relative to the NC legislature. Peter is the Federation’s nomination to become their President for 2012 & 2013.
December 7, 2011 – Our annual Christmas Party and Holiday gathering at Ragazzi’s Restaurant.
November 2, 2011 – The program was on Therapy dog training. Samantha Seal, a Delta Dog trainer, was our guest speaker.
October 5, 2011 – Our guest speaker was Wake County Sheriff Donnie Harrison and one of his K-9 officers. The Wake County Sheriff’s Office K-9 Team was formed in January 2003 and is an important tool for fighting crime in Wake County. The K-9 Team, primarily funded with donations from private corporations and individuals has 11 dogs on the street. Sheriff Harrison gladly answered questions and provided us with insight into his K-9 units operation.
September 7, 2011 – We had three members of The City of Raleigh Police Department K-9 unit, Officers Hoyle and Kellogg, and Sgt Lowery, who heads up the K-9 unit. They answered questions and hosted a K-9 demonstration outside on the grassy area next to the building. The general public was invited to attend the K-9 demonstration

September 2010 – Raleigh Police Department K-9 Unit demonstration Sgt Craig Barnett and his team joined us to begin the demo at 7 P.M. at the Millbrook Exchange Park Center. We held the activities outside. The general public was welcome. We had a GSD drug dog, a GSD bomb dog and a GSDC general patrol dog. We will also had a Q&A period.
July 2010 – Herding Demonstration & discussions. This was held at Whorton Farm 8005 Mary Hall Rd., Rougemont, NC.
